You’re walking through a birch forest somewhere in the northern woods — maybe Maine, maybe Minnesota, maybe Canada — and you notice something ugly growing out of a tree trunk. It’s black, cracked, lumpy, and looks exactly like someone glued a chunk of charcoal to the bark. Your first instinct is to ignore it. Your second instinct, if you’ve been spending any time in wellness circles lately, is to wonder: is that chaga?
Probably. And that ugly black lump might be one of the most sought-after fungi on the planet right now.
But let’s slow down before you start hacking it off the tree. There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about chaga, starting with the most basic question people ask: is it edible, or is it poisonous?
The answer is more nuanced than either.
What Is Chaga, Exactly?
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is not really a mushroom in the way most people picture one. There’s no cap. No stem. No gills. What you see growing on the outside of a birch tree is technically a sclerotium — a dense, hardened mass of fungal mycelium that erupts through the bark and sits there, sometimes for years, slowly expanding. The actual fruiting body of the chaga fungus rarely appears, and when it does, it grows flat under the bark and is almost never seen by foragers.
So that black, crusty growth you’re looking at? That’s the part people want. It’s been used in traditional medicine across Russia, Scandinavia, and northern Indigenous cultures for centuries, brewed into tea as a folk remedy for everything from digestive issues to immune support.
Chaga grows almost exclusively on birch trees — white birch and yellow birch are the main hosts — in cold climates across the Northern Hemisphere. If you’re finding something that looks like chaga on an oak, a cherry tree, or a poplar, stop. It’s not true birch chaga, and whatever health compounds you’re hoping to get from it likely aren’t there. Identification: How to Know It’s Really Chaga
From a distance, chaga can look like just another weird growth on a tree. Up close, it’s fairly distinctive — but not as instantly recognizable as, say, a lion’s mane. This is a mushroom (well, a fungus) that actually does have look-alikes, and getting it right matters.
The exterior. True chaga has a hard, deeply cracked surface that looks like burnt charcoal or volcanic rock. It’s jet black, rough, and irregular in shape. The host tree. It must be a living birch. Chaga on dead trees is itself dead and shouldn’t be harvested — the beneficial compounds degrade once the host dies. Look for the characteristic white, peeling bark of birch. If the tree isn’t birch, walk away.

Is Chaga Edible or Poisonous?
Here’s where it gets complicated, and why I said “edible” needs an asterisk.
Chaga is not poisonous. You’re not going to keel over from touching it or even from accidentally consuming a look-alike (more on those in a minute). But calling it “edible” in the way you’d call a chanterelle or a porcini edible is misleading. Nobody is slicing chaga into a stir-fry. The texture is somewhere between wood and rock. You can’t chew it. You can’t sauté it.
What people do is brew it. Chaga is traditionally consumed as tea — chunks or ground powder steeped in hot water, sometimes simmered for hours. The resulting brew is dark, earthy, mildly bitter, and has a faint hint of vanilla thanks to naturally occurring vanillin. It’s also prepared as tinctures, extracts, and powdered supplements.
So chaga is consumable, yes. Safe for most people in moderate amounts, yes. But there are real cautions worth knowing about.
Oxalates. Chaga is high in oxalic acid. For most people, this isn’t an issue in moderate doses. But if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney disease, this is a serious concern. Tree burls. These are the most common source of confusion. Burls are abnormal woody growths that form on trees due to stress — injury, infection, environmental damage. From a distance, a dark burl on a birch trunk can absolutely look like chaga. The key difference: burls are covered in bark that matches the rest of the tree. They’re smooth or bark-textured, not charcoal-black and cracked. And if you chip one open, the inside is wood, not golden-orange cork.
Black knot fungus (Apiosporina morbosa). This one grows on cherry and plum trees, forming dark, elongated, gnarly masses along branches. It can look chaga-ish at first glance, especially when young. But it grows on fruit trees (not birch), tends to be more elongated and uniform in shape, and is harder than chaga throughout. No golden interior.
False tinder fungus (Phellinus igniarius). Also called “fool’s chaga” for good reason. This polypore grows on birch and willow trees, has a dark, cracked exterior, and could easily deceive a beginner. The giveaway: its interior is dark brown to rusty-red, not the signature gold-orange of real chaga. It also tends to be hoof-shaped with a more symmetrical profile, while real chaga is irregular and craggy.
Birch polypore (Fomitopsis betulina). This one looks nothing like chaga up close — it has a smooth, rounded cap and is light brown and spongy — but beginners occasionally confuse young specimens if they’ve never seen either fungus in person.
Here’s the reassuring part: none of these look-alikes are acutely toxic. You’re unlikely to poison yourself by misidentifying one of them. But they’re not beneficial either, and consuming unknown fungi is never a good idea. Harvesting Chaga Responsibly
Chaga is a slow-growing organism. A conk can take five to ten years to reach harvestable size, and overharvesting has become a real concern as demand has surged. If you’re going to forage chaga, do it right.
Only harvest from living birch trees. Chaga on dead trees is dead chaga. The compounds you want — betulin, betulinic acid, polysaccharides, antioxidants — depend on the living relationship between the fungus and the host tree. Once the tree dies, that’s over.
Take no more than a quarter of the conk. Leave the majority behind so the mycelium can continue growing. Stripping an entire chaga mass off a tree kills it. You want it to regenerate — both for the ecosystem and for any future foragers who come after you.
Use the right tools. A sturdy knife, a hatchet, or a small axe works. Cut carefully at the base where the chaga meets the bark. Try not to gouge into the tree’s heartwood.
Season. Many experienced foragers prefer late fall through winter. The trees are dormant, sap isn’t running, and the cold concentrations may actually enhance certain compounds. Plus, with the leaves down, chaga is much easier to spot on bare birch trunks.
Know the local rules. Harvesting chaga is regulated in some areas. National forests, state parks, and private land all have different policies. Check before you cut.
Preparing Chaga
Once you’ve got a confirmed chaga harvest, the process is pretty low-tech.
Break or chop it into smaller chunks — roughly walnut-sized works well. Let them dry thoroughly in a warm, well-ventilated space, or use a dehydrator. Once dried, you can keep the chunks as-is for brewing, or grind them into powder with a coffee grinder or blender.
For tea, the simplest method is to simmer a few chunks in water for at least an hour — some people go three or four hours for a stronger brew. The water should turn a deep, rich brown.
